Recent developments in Quake Live and at holysh1t.net

December 22, 2008 3 comments Article

Time has gone by and things have changed. Not just at holysh1t.net, but mainly in quake live itself. Here are some key developments that occurred in the last few weeks:

Change #1: The Quake Live website has permanently moved

The Quake Live website has changed its location from quakelive.idsoftware.com to beta.quakelive.com. The beta is still closed and you still need an invitation to get in. Yet id software is sending out a massive amount of invites and it is said that the current user base of approx 25,000 will be doubled in no time, bringing Quake Live to about 50,000 closed beta testers very soon (rough estimates). Ask around in #qlpickup.eu on mIRC if you need an invite, you will surely be assisted soon enough. Read More

How to get colors in your Quake Live nickname

December 21, 2008 67 comments Article

Veteran Quake players know all about it, but many new players wonder how to have colors in the Quake Live nickname and clantag.
This is something very easy as all it requires is the addition of color codes. Each color has its own number and by using a ^ you can tell Quake to interprete what follows in that color.
^1 = Red
^2 = Green
^3 = Yellow
^4 = Blue
^5 = Cyan (light blue)
^6 = Magenta (purple)
^7 = White

Other colors are not yet supported. Read More

Defending Troubled Waters (QZCTF2)

December 14, 2008 3 comments Article

capture-the-flag-strategyAs promised, we would be posting more strategy discussions. This time we take you to the troubled waters.

For the quake veterans, QZCTF2 is nothing new as it is actually an exact copy of Q3CTF2. Nevertheless it might be interesting to write about this map.

Troubled Waters: a map for defenders?
I think I can easily say this map is very heavily defense oriented. The flagdef has Yellow Armor and Mega Health. He has a good overview on incoming enemies and can position himself to have an advantage over the attackers.
Moreover, attackers entering enemy base will probably not be stacked. First of all they have to cross mid which is not easy when you have a good raildefender. Additionally, there are not many items for an attacker to pick up; basically enemy’s Yellow Armor at rail is the only one that is easily accessible. Of course there is Red Armor and Medkit in water but those can not be considered easily accessible. Read More

Customizing your Quake Live config

December 5, 2008 45 comments Article

A well customized Quake Live config that fits your preferences well enough is the beginning of good game play. Quake is one of the few games that allows extreme config customization. This is one aspect that makes Quake, in my opinion, better than all other shooters and creates extra opportunities. Read More

Pickup channel changes to #qlpickup.eu

December 2, 2008 4 comments Article

You might have noticed the old pickup channel #euqlctf has been traded in for a new one at #qlpickup.eu (quakenet). Why such a drastic and seemingly unnecessary act? The main reason is the fact that #qlpickup.eu can offer us both TDM and CTF games, and later possibly even more modes. The channel name can include just about any possible quakelive gametype and isn’t limited by the tag “CTF” which #euqlctf held in it’s name.

Naturally such a big change comes at a risk. #euqlctf had already become quite a popular pickup channel, with regular games and a great community. So why decide to take the risk of blowing this all anyway? Read More
