Quake Live strafe jumping basics

Posted by xephyr

In my opinion, one of the most difficult skills to master in Quake Live is strafe jumping. It looks very simple but it's not that easy if you want to do it correctly. It is often an undervalued skill of gaming. When you have got good movement skills you will be able to move faster to your objectives and even more importantly, you will be harder to hit.

Strafe Jumping step by step

  1. Press forward
  2. While keeping the forward key pressed, press jump and press the move left or move right key. It is important to note that the move left/move right key and jump key are pressed at the same time.
  3. To gain extra speed, you should move your mouse smoothly to around a 45 degree in the direction of the strafe.
  4. For consecutive strafejumps, you should jump again immediately after landing, changing the direction of strafe as well as mouse motion.

Don't freak out if it doesn't work the first few times. Mastering the Quake Live movement takes time and practice. :)

Quake Live configs for download

Posted by xephyr

If you want to try Quake Live config files of other players, this is your chance. In this post we want to give you the opportunity to compare other player's config with your own.

No example screenshots have been added yet. Quake Live is still in a closed beta fase and publishing screenshots would break the Non Disclosure Agreement (NDA).

Configs from the professionals

It is a pretty standard Quake Live config but all the important commands are there.

On stermy.com, the most known Italian quaker is sharing his Quake Live config. This config is what you would expect from an experienced player like stermy. It has all the right settings for optimal gameplay at the expense of the graphics, of course. Definitely worth a try if you don't care about the graphics.

Configs from the community

This is a very well documented config which makes it easily customizable. The resolution is set to 1920*1200 but this can of course be changed: r_mode in console or config file or via the game menu.

This config has 3 scripts, i.e. a volume-, a demo- and a zoomscript (you will have to write +zoom when joining a new server). Maximum FPS has been set to 75, this makes the game more smooth on a TFT screen. A thin lightning gun beam and small rail trail might be cool extras to make this config worthwile to try.

If you're looking for nice graphics, don't try this config. If your computer can't keep up with Quake Live on high detail, you might give this config a try. Almost all graphics have been removed. Not only to improve FPS but more importantly to improve the gameplay.

If you wish to see your config in the list, please post a link to your config in the commentbox below with some information.

Changing the Quake Live crosshair colors

Posted by Malice

Changing the crosshair colors to your personal preference has proven to be very important to many quakers, considering the many requests for this feature.

Now that id software has installed this feature you can easily apply it by either changing your menu settings or updating your personal quake live config.

To change the Quake Live crosshair color through the console or in your config, use the command:

cg_crosshaircolor X

Where "X" stands for a value from 1 to 7, each representing a different color:

1 = red
2 = yellow
3 = green
4 = cyan
5 = blue
6 = pink
7 = white

For this crosshair color command to have effect you must first be sure to turn off the crosshair health option (this option changes the crosshair color according to your health status). To remove crosshair health use the following command in the console or in your config:

cg_crosshairhealth 0

What date will Quake Live be released?

Posted by Malice

It is not yet known when Quake Live will be released. The game has to go through several stages in development before it reaches that point. On January the 7th the game is still in closed beta which means you need to be invited to play. Next up is the open beta, of which the date is also unknown.

Once the game is ready, id software will officially "release" the game and reset all the player data of the beta period.

If I were to guess what date Quake Live will be released I would pick Quakecon 2009, scheduled for 13 - 16 August and heavily advertised in game.

However, Quake Live is a game that's easily updated with content by the developers. It is id software's intention to keep the game updated constantly with new content (maps, skins, ...) even when the game has been officially released.

*update* Quake Live entered the public beta fase 24th of February 2009.

*update* Quake Live release was 6th of August 2010.

Is it possible to change your Quake Live nickname?

Posted by Malice

No, it's not possible to change your nickname in Quake Live. The only thing you can change about your nickname is the following:

  • Capital letters or lowercase letters

However, what you can do to get a new nickname is create a new account in Quake Live, once you have a BETA key. To create a new account just log out of quake live. Log back into the beta screen and register a new account on the screen where it also asks for your email.

Id software does not care too much about duplicate accounts. Quake live does not exclusively use the number of registered accounts as a reference for traffic and popularity. The userbase statistics would be very inaccurate which would not convince potential advertisers. Don't spam too many new accounts either though, just as a precaution.

It's also been said that once quake live is publicly released and is out of the beta, all stats and accounts will be deleted or reset. Then it could be possible to get an account nickname which has currently been taken already. Though it's not entirely sure this will happen.
