In the last few days we couldn't help but notice how clanbase has nearly 30 private Quake Live servers to their disposal to run CB competitions.

This made us curious if it would be reasonable for us to ask 1 or 2 private servers for #qlpickup.eu as well. Just for the sake of refiring some of that interest in those pickup games Quakers have come to love in the past few years.

[15:52] -echbot10-- 3weeks 159hours 4mins 33secs ago

Currently the last pickup game was played nearly 4 weeks ago. During the closed beta when servers were still 8 max, over 30 games were played on a weekly basis.

It's understandable these games have tremendously slowed down when you consider how difficult it now is to organize a pickup game. First of all you need to find an empty server. Then you need to guide all 10 (!) players on that one server before all other pub players find their way to the game. As you can imagine, this whole process is a pain if you're not able to lock a server.

So with this in mind, and the fact there are over 150 people idling #qlpickup.eu, all eager to play pickup games if it weren't so difficult, we are now asking you all in this new poll if it sounds reasonable for the #qlpickup.eu channel to ask id software developers for 2 private servers, just like Clanbase got. One server for TDM games and another for CTF games.

Note: There is a poll embedded within this post, please visit the site to participate in this post's poll.

You might have noticed the old pickup channel #euqlctf has been traded in for a new one at #qlpickup.eu (quakenet). Why such a drastic and seemingly unnecessary act? The main reason is the fact that #qlpickup.eu can offer us both TDM and CTF games, and later possibly even more modes. The channel name can include just about any possible quakelive gametype and isn't limited by the tag "CTF" which #euqlctf held in it's name.

Naturally such a big change comes at a risk. #euqlctf had already become quite a popular pickup channel, with regular games and a great community. So why decide to take the risk of blowing this all anyway?First of all there was a poll about this question. Thanks to all for voting! The end result was very close, though with a slight edge in favour of a new pickup channel. Secondly, there are several benefits of having one general pickup channel that offers more than one game type:

Games in both game types will fill up faster. When a TDM game needs 2 more people to start and there's 2 in queue for a CTF game, those 2 can easily notice this and just hop in for a quick TDM match. This would be difficult when 2 separate pickup channels exist.

Sharing the cost & use of (future) private pickup servers. When id software makes private game servers available it would be more efficient to "share" all these private pickup servers. This way all the available pickup servers in the community can be used at any time, where as with 2 separate pickup channels, servers could be left unused. (For example, when a TDM-channel has 2 games running on both their servers with one more game ready to start, it can't use the CTF-channel's server, even though none of the CTF-channel servers are being used since they are reserved just for the CTF-pickups).

One general pickup channel won't separate the TDM and CTF communities, but keep them more together as a whole.

At the very beginning of #qlpickup.eu the CTF history will still be quite present. Possibly no TDM games will be played at first. Maybe for some weeks or even months. Yet eventually new people will join #qlpickup.eu who will actively participate in TDM pickup games and help start new games. A 'new community' will form itself and develop in a way that's not yet known, hopefully collaborating with the CTF community.

Don't hesitate if you got any questions: join & perform #qlpickup.eu and have fun.

(poll closed)

We'd like to see our community prosper and to do just that we need the help of you, the community! Even if our primary goal is to be the place to be for European CTF games, we can not and must not forget our TDM friends out there.Just like all of you, we have no clue what possibilities - if any - there will be for providing servers to play pickup games, and of course we'd like to see our primary server a dedicated ctf machine, but this does not mean that if an additional server comes into play - through sponsorship or "from the community to the community"-wise - that we as that particular community can not offer ourselves a TDM location too.

We'd like to know what the community thinks about it as well. After all, no players = no community, and none of us want that! We hope to offer the same ejoyable times for both oldskool players as for newcomers, no matter the gametype.

So please vote and don't hesitate to comment on the subject!
