Dallas, Texas! The place to be for one of the world's most known LAN parties ever: QuakeCon! Held August 12-15 at the Hilton Anatole! But this post is not about the accomodations regarding QuakeCon, it's about the tournaments that will be played there!

QuakeCon 2010 will feature 3 tournaments:

The Intel QUAKE LIVE Masters Championship will feature a 64 of the world's best players in a double-elimination best-of-3 match system which concludes in a best-of-5 final. Prize stash consists of over $25000 and the gold spot goes home with no less than $14000! Impressive!

But that's just one, as a second tournament there will be The QUAKE LIVE Capture the Flag Championship and yes you read that right: Capture the flag. It's awesome that at such an event, CTF will be present as a tournament on such a great event as QuakeCon!
Again over $25000 (of which $14000 to the winning team) in a single-elimination best-of-3 match system.

And to conclude, there's The QUAKE LIVE Open Tournament available to any who show up to claim $1500 for first spot. A very nice prize for a free-to-all Duel competition in a single-elimination best-of-3 system.

Pre-registration for the Masters and CTF tournaments is available on http://www.quakecon.org/tournament which is also the source for rules and terms of the events. The Open Tournament is on a first-come-first-served basis, so be on time!

Group stage: part 1

Group #1 saw rapha, CAREEM, noctis and k1llsen, but CAREEM didn't make it to DisneyLand Paris, so it's down to the North American favourite to show what he's got against noctis and k1llsen. Two sound victories there leave it up to the Europeans to claim 2nd place. A tense 3-mapper sees noctis claim the spot over k1llsen.

Group #2 lists Sl1p, Cooller, strenx and bodzo. Cooller being the favourite here, does what he does and claims 3 wins in 2:0 games. strenx follows along with two 2:0 games and bodzo claims his game against Sl1p in a 2:1 match.

Group #3: stermy, Cypher, l1nkje and GaRpY. Another full European group which sees highseeder Cypher secure his 3 wins, stermy going to next round with 2 wins and GaRpY winning the consolation game of this group against l1nkje.

Group #4 features only 3 players, but another North American contestant: DaHang to hold his own against the likes of av3k and fazz. fazz being the underdog in this group, manages to steal 1 map from DaHang but sees the other 2 maps go to DaHang, who finishes 2nd in this group as av3k beats both players with a 2:0 victory.

Group stage: part 2

Stakes go up as the brackets narrow down to just 8 players divided in 2 groups!

The remaining 4 players for Group A in part 2 are: rapha, stermy, av3k and strenx. rapha slips up against stermy but gets a hold of himself in his games against strenx and av3k, be it not too solid, but it does see him go to next round. strenx unfortunately is eliminated during this round as he lost all 3 maps, but not without a good fight versus both av3k and stermy. Out of the latter 2, only 1 can join rapha in the playoffs and it is av3k who beats stermy, securing 1st spot over rapha in this group.

Group B puts Cypher, Cooller, DaHang and noctis in the pit. noctis is pinned against the wall with only 1 map win against Cypher, who does manage to beat Cooller, but loses to DaHang. Cooller in turn wins against DaHang and DaHang beats Cypher. With noctis eliminated, this puts all 3 of them on equal terms in map wins, but it is the for-against scores of the games in between these 3 players that sees DaHang lead this group and Cooller taking 2nd place.

Playoffs

av3k and rapha join up with DaHang and Cooller in the Semi Finals, but it happens so that the Europeans and North Americans are pitched against each other, which leaves a final that is intercontinental!

It's only Best of 3 - kind of a weird decision in such a large scale money-supported tournament - but it's av3k outplaying Cooller on ztntourney1 and qzdm13 that sees av3k secure his spot in the final, and on the other end of the Atlantic Ocean - figuratively then as it's all happening in DisneyLand Paris - that rapha wins from DaHang in a 2:0 win as well.

3rd place goes to Cooller as in this consolation (hardly with the money attached to the bronze position) match it takes again just 2 mapwins to secure the $2000 for Cooller against DaHang.

But the main event is the Grand Final between rapha and av3k, and it promises to be a good game with rapha needing all his skill to keep av3k at bay in a 7:2 on qzdm13 and a close 6-5 on qztourney7, as such only needing 2 maps which rewards the gold player rapha with $8000 and silver spot av3k with $4000.
Congratulations!

If you didn't catch these finals, have a look in our library as we have the VOD of this great game already available. (I'm sure remaining vods for other games will follow as soon as the streaming teams during the 4 days of ESWC are done processing them.)

Sunday, July 3rd: Final at 15:00 CET

The system consists of 4 groups with each 5 players (stage 1), of which the top 2 proceed in 2 groups of 4 (stage 2) and to be concluded in a 4 player, single elimination bracket.

Map pool consists of the usual: qzdm6, qzdm13, qztourney7, qztourney9 and ztntourney1

And all that for a nice prize stash of $ 8000 for the gold, $ 4000 for the silver and $ 2000 for the bronze! Impressive!

3 BYOC spots had to be filled during the on-site event qualifier to join the main Kaspersky QL Duel tournament.

These 3 spots were filled by madix, JiePie and Stylezz, who came out as the top 3 of the BYOC tournament.

15 players then faced off with each other in the main event: the Kaspersky Quake Live duel tournament with a very nice prize stash. I say 15 players as Cooller apparently had issues to sort out a travel visa and could not make it.

The results of our poll predicted that Cypher was the favorite, followed up by Cooller (but not present) and av3k, so the public opinion was indeed correct to say that Cypher and av3k were rightly in their spot in the finals:

1st place: av3k - 30000 SEK ~ 3150 EUR

2nd place: Cypher - 15000 SEK ~1575 EUR

3rd place: strenx - 5000 SEK ~ 525 EUR

Congratulations to the top 3 and may we see another great Dreamhack event soon!

Vote below!
Note: There is a poll embedded within this post, please visit the site to participate in this post's poll.

Names are not alphabetically sorted, but by group, so per 4 of each group. This way you maybe can predict better who will come out on top of each group before voting!

Notice I included the BYOC-spots just in case any of you thinks that rapha or dahang or chance will pack their bags and drop down to Sweden for some good ol' QL action!

Fox won the last qualifier yesterday and that means he will join 12 already qualified players and 3 BYOC lan competitors in a 16 slot Duel Tournament on Dreamhack Summer 2010.

Seeds:

Top: Cypher, av3k, Cooller, fox

High: Spart1e, stermy, strenx, noctis

Mid: Guard, k1llsen, Z4muZ, fazz

Low: dem0n and the 3 remaining BYOC-spots

These players are seeded into the following groups:

Group A

Group B

Group C

av3k
strenx
k1llsen

Cypher
stermy
fazz

Dreamhack QL will be played accross the full 3 days of the weekend of 19th and 20th of June for the bigger part of the tournament, but the main rounds - semis and grand final - is on Monday the 21st! And I have to say by the looks of these groups, whoever wins a spot on the BYOC lan, will have a tough main round in the Kaspersky Duel tournament!

Good luck to all!

And oh boy, some great games have been broadcasted with excellent commentary by ESL.

Although having a rough start, ESL TV managed to broadcast a lot of good games from the 4 days of Quake Live that the IEM4 WC lasted. Having some ddos attack issues on Wednesday, some games were caught up on Thursday.

Today the Quake Live world championship kicks off but it's interesting to see that the players are not nervous at all and instead of training hard are giving interviews here and there

I smell a lot of boasting but still, have fun reading:

Strenx on "who he wants to beat at IEM":

I want to beat people who spend their lives playing, those who take it seriously. Then if I do that, I will just prove that it's bullshit to train a lot.

Read it at helloliefje.

This is why i'm Cooller (part 3/3)

I think it's why I'm Cooller because I have something that other players don't have and it's why I'm one of the best. It's what others don't have.

Find out what he has at SK Gaming.

Av3k seems to have some comments on several things (Cooller, ESR, IEM EU ending... )

Since a long time already I try to get on their nerves however I can.
They also flame polish people.

A translated extract on ESReality, but the full article in Polish is at Frag eXecutors
