to keep this archive of many awesome great userfriendly tutorials and guides going, I moved it to another host. A renewal was due and of course I wanted to move to a more optimal hosting with regards to what is needed for which amount of ping ping!

Initial migration was easy, full ftp and mysql dump, and the followup restoration, but a few things went crazy.
- plugins: fixed!
- minor styling/path issues: fixed!
- a system path which did not feel like opening up to the rest of the website due to a forgotten htaccess from previous host: fixed!

But 1 thing remains and I've cracked my head on it during the weekend but I can't seem to find out why the theme goes nutters when you enter a post. The post is there (woohoo) but the sidebar and footer area is missing. Sooner or later, I'll figure this out, the important part is that the data is restored and accessible, but if there are wordpress heroes out there, I do prefer sooner over later as this thing drives me coucou!

Hey guys!

Today, we are proudly announcing the release of something new: The Quake Live Recruitment Center.

The concept is quite simple: if you're looking for a clan or for players, here's just the place for all of you !

We had the idea to create a system here at #teams.ql in which anyone can easily find a clan that fits his shoe or find future teammates to complete their lineup!

We support all the teammodes (TDM/CTF/CA) and use a variety of filters to make your search criterias as sharp as possible.

If you have any kind of question, suggestion, etc. just get on #teams.ql on QuakeNet.

I want to particularly thank Lashknife who has done an amazing work coding the whole package !

Recruitment Center:

Some things about the existing config generator could use some improvement (such as it being crammed into a small column) so I decided to renew it and at the same time make it even more userfriendly by adding a couple of features:

Preview weapon style images (due long time)

A keyboard that maps your bind layout and allows you to drag/drop to bind keys to input fields. Check it out!

Expanded the rail options (also have a look at the Rail settings post I made.)

Generate a subset of values like only controls or only graphical settings

Read the full changelog.

It's still at the same location - http://www.holysh1t.net/quake-live-config-generator/ - so you don't need to change any bookmarks or browser history to visit it. Also available via Resources in the menu or through the hotlink at the top of every page on this website.

Hope you like it!

In order to make the Quake Live community strong and long lasting, we need both oldskool and new players to keep playing the game. Many experienced Quake players know their way around the game to have it look and feel exactly as they want. For new players, this is chaos. The flood of questions on the #quakelive irc channel proves this.

We from Holysh1t saw this flood coming and started preparing some important pages to help those players feel comfortable in playing and fine tuning the game.

Together with the new look of the website, we're launching two whole new pages that focus on using the console and tweaking the config:

a new webbased Quake Live config generator

and a complete cvar & command list.

Both links can also be found by opening the Quake Live Resources tab on the menu, where you will also find other links like the Quake Live on IRC page.

Have fun tweaking and don't hesitate to let us know what you think of the new pages!

About a week ago we announced a restyling of this website. We kept our promise and here it is! The old design was limited in options and a reorganization of the layout was badly needed.

Although the new design might still be a bit buggy the first few days, most things should be running smoothly if you're running IE7+. Bugs in IE6 will be fixed later on.

Either way... Lets review some of the major improvements in this theme.

New category structure

On the old Holysh1t website we had over 10 different categories. We decided to make things easier and put all posts into 4 general categories. Each of those 4 categores also has a series of subcategories.

This system should allow us to organize stuff quite easily and make plenty of subcategories without cluttering all things up. You can browse all the categories and subcategory posts by using the subnavbar.

Front page Portal Style

For the front page we needed more flexibility in the news we present. No more did we want a quality topic to be pushed down the page, receiving less attention whenever a newer report was published.

We can now make each individual post stick to the front page and give it a "featured" post style.

In addition to that we also presented the 4 latest posts in each of the 4 different categories in seperate modules on the frontpage.

This also allows us to keep the front page updated with news from all sections, regardless of the posting date.

And lots of other stuff

Besides the big and obvious changes there are also a ton of other small fixes which are less obvious but still very useful. Stuff like a wider sidemenu, which allows us to embed YouTube videos on the front page, or the subscribe counter/link which allows you to both subscribe to Holysh1t.net updates by mail or RSS and view the amount of people that have already subscribed.

If you haven't already done so, subscribe now to receive Quake Live related news updates on a daily basis!

That's it for now. I hope you like this new layout. Let us know what you think in the comments!

Some of you may have read in the most recent news update that Quake Live is now using Twitter.

Wait... what? You can't say that! You're breaking the beta Non Disclosure Agreement!

Well, not exactly. Twitter is a public feed. Just do a little search in Google for "Quake Live Twitter" and you'll see that these updates are not private and they are there for everyone to follow.

Ok then. But what exactly is this "Twitter" You're talking about?

Twitter has been the internet hype of 2008. The Twitter system is similar to "Facebook updates", and to be honest, that's really the only thing twitter does: keep people updated about random activities in a short sentence of maximum 180 characters.

Twitter.com: Twitter is a free social messaging utility for staying connected in real-time.

Most people use Twitter to share information about everyday events with friends and family, such as: "I'm picking up the kids from school" or "I'm going out for a walk".

Yet the possibilities are endless. Anyone can use Twitter to keep everybody updated about just about anything.

The Quake Live crew, for example, uses Twitter to keep us updated about things such as:

Quakelive: We are testing new code on the backend, you may experience some disruptions in the next few hours. (2 days ago)
Quakelive: SyncError tells TTimo to degauss the OpenFire. (We're currently experiencing a few issues following the update, please stand by.) (2 days ago)

These seemingly unimportant events that don't seem noteworthy at first glance have inspired millions of people on the internet to do the same.

All it requires to receive tweets from people (yeah, that's what they call these little messages), is for you to create a Twitter account and Follow the people you're interested in.

Some Quakelive related people or instances active on Twitter are:

Holysh1t.net

Quakelive

djWheat (Quake shout cast guru)

Stermy

... you?

If you follow us on Twitter you'll receive a Tweet each time we post something new.

Leave a link to your Twitter account in the comments to find more followers also playing Quakelive!

Holysh1t is currently one of the biggest public Quake Live communities out there with on average 200 people at #qlpickup.eu and over 1500 people visiting the website on a daily basis.

Yet we still have the ambition to do much more than we're already doing. Besides beginner guides, interviews and strategy discussion we also wish to provide event coverage, organize our own online tournaments and who knows what else.

But to achieve all this we need help from the people within this community. We can't do everything by ourselves anymore and we would like to get as much enthusiastic people on board as possible!

Basic requirements:

Be somewhat active. As a crew member you should try and contribute with a newspost once every 2 weeks if possible. Keeping the community updated of a running event would obviously also qualify as being active.

English language. Good knowledge of the English language and the ability to use a spelling checker are important.

Game knowledge. Basic knowledge of the game Quake will definitely come in handy when contributing to a Quake Live community.

IRC. We all gather on IRC, so being available there as well is important.

Possible tasks:

Follow events and keep the community updated (for example the QL TDM nations cup);

Write guides or strategy posts;

Write about anything else related to Quake Live;

Help organize online tournaments which Holysh1t.net will run in the future;

Create videos for on YouTube (somewhat with video editing skills is very welcome right now!)

etc ...

What does Holysh1t.net offer in return?

Your contributions will be read by hundreds of people on a daily basis, possibly thousands if Quake Live hits it big.

You will work together with a dedicated group of people.

You will be a full worthy member and your input will matter. We all work together and help each other out with things.

No money (we are all volunteers).

How do you apply?

Contact us and tell us a bit about yourself, your skills and your history in games.

Thanks for your interest and good luck!

Time has gone by and things have changed. Not just at holysh1t.net, but mainly in quake live itself. Here are some key developments that occurred in the last few weeks:

Change #1: The Quake Live website has permanently moved

The Quake Live website has changed its location from quakelive.idsoftware.com to beta.quakelive.com. The beta is still closed and you still need an invitation to get in. Yet id software is sending out a massive amount of invites and it is said that the current user base of approx 25,000 will be doubled in no time, bringing Quake Live to about 50,000 closed beta testers very soon (rough estimates). Ask around in #qlpickup.eu on mIRC if you need an invite, you will surely be assisted soon enough.

Change #2: Quake Live changes server slots limit

Old school quakers often grind their teeth each time id software decides to tweak quake live's core game play (compared to the Quake 3 game play). A few months ago it were the rocket launcher, railgun and lightning gun that caused for ruckus, ... now it might just be the maximum server slots change on the TDM/CA/CTF servers that cause for a mayhem. Concerning CA and CTF, the increase in max server slots to 10 won't be much of a problem. In fact, the CTF players have been explicitly asking for this change.

Yet when turning our heads and looking at the TDM side of the table, things are a lot different. Never before in the quake (3) history has a TDM match been 5v5 and the first reactions are not to be called "positive". 5v5 TDM games more heavily promote anti-quake game play such as camping, spamming and general disorganized team play. This might be more fun for beginners (kudos quake live developers!), yet I'm sure more seasoned quakers are smashing their heads against the wall right now.

The increased server slots in the TDM games have actually managed to put the organized competitions in the beta (such as the quake.cz TDM cup) to a near complete halt. Many in the community see only these 3 options available right now:

Have two people stay in spectator mode to fill up the slot and allow 4v4 TDM games this way. This of course causes problems when spectators are of the same team as a competing team. These spectators can very easily pass on information about the opposing team through ventrilo or teamspeak.

We can hope id software changes the system soon. A possibility for the TDM servers could be to reserve 2 slots for spectators at all time. This way spectators that are AFK don't clog up slots and the TDM games don't turn into camping FFA games.

Wait for some kind of modification for competitive game play or private servers, which would enable lock teams, timeout, etc... Yet this could still take a while.

Either way, the #qlpickup.eu CTF community welcomes the changes to the servers. 5v5 CTF games will enable more advanced teamplay, hopefully making the games more fun. How exactly this server slot increase will translate to the new Quake Live CTF maps, however, is yet to be seen. To the TDM teams out there,... our condolences .

Change #3: Holysh1t.net now has a Quake Live Community Forum!

Hopefully it will allow discussion more easily. The comments section can be kind of rusty from time to time. Registering can be done either on this website on the right, or in the forum itself: Holysh1t Quake Live Community Forum. Have fun!
