(This was originally posted here on EmSixTeen's blog)

Prompted by a thread on the QuakeLive forums asking if there were any programs with syntax highlighting for editing QL configs, and the fact that there isn't, I just went off and made a custom language file for Notepad++.

I went through the configs from the games I play, and added in some extra things to make those work too. It's not perfect and I'm no guru, but it's better than just plain old black text on a white background. The colours need tweaked, but they're workable at the moment.

So yeah, this should provide rough syntax highlighting for your game config files in Notepad++. Screenshots:

Tested with configs from:

QuakeLive

Quake 3 CPMa

Call of Duty 2

Call of Duty 4

Counter-Strike 1.6

Counter-Strike: Source

>> DOWNLOAD HERE <<

Any suggestions in the comments, please!

I can relate to such projects, when releasing my first version of the config generator, I had to fix a huge amount of bugs, in little spare time, with almost weekly updates and changes to the commands and variables in Quake Live. That was even during closed beta. I can only cheer for a fellow gamer who took the bull by the horns in releasing a HUD generator. And when that person asks me to promote this thing, of course I will spam it wherever I can.

As you can see on the YouTube demonstration video below, the hud generator features the ingame window, with several selectable options like drawgun, weapon bar location and the option to show a grid for easy coordination and item placement. This is also where the snap functionality comes in handy. Various items can be dragged and dropped onto the view, allowing for many customizations regarding font size, color, transparency and positioning.

www.youtube.com/watch?v=zLoQCvArD-c

So far, being in a public alpha state, it won't give you a config yet that you can directly use in Quake Live, but I'm sure that in time lots of extra features and fancies will be added to make this a very good tool for old and new players. But if you can't wait to try it out, then make sure to peek inside the FAQ to get going.

So, you want to use a custom HUD in QuakeLive and aren't sure how? This is an easy to follow guide on how to get and install a custom HUD. Finding and using a custom HUD in QuakeLive is simple!

I originally wrote a HUD install guide almost 2 years ago during QuakeLive's closed beta stage, but it wasn't great and is a bit out dated now.

First, you need to choose which custom HUD you want to use. There is a pretty vast resource at Custom HUDs for Quake Live, with 342 HUDs so far. Here is a link to my author page on there. Browse through there and find something you like.

Once you've found and downloaded the zip of your custom HUD, extract it. There should be at least 2 files, hudname.cfg and hudname.menu (although some have more than one .menu).

Go to your QuakeLive folder. If you're not sure where that is, open Start, then Run, and paste in the location:

Windows Vista/7: %userprofile%\AppData\LocalLow\id Software\quakelive\home\baseq3
Windows XP: %appdata%\id Software\quakelive\home\baseq3
GNU/Linux: ~/.quakelive/quakelive/home/baseq3

You need to make a new folder called ui in \home\baseq3\, and put these files (hudname.cfg and hudname.menu) inside. You should have something similar to below.

homeaseq3 folder. Make a folder called 'ui'.

Your new ui folder, with custom HUD files inside.

Now all you need to do is load the custom HUD. If you use an autoexec.cfg, you can add the following line to it:

cg_hudFiles "ui/hudname.cfg"

The HUD should be loaded next time you start your game. Or if you are in-game, you can do the same followed by ;loadhud to load the HUD, like below.

Loading a HUD via console.

Congratulations, you should now have the custom HUD in-game!

Help, my HUD isn't working! Troubleshooting:

If all you get is the default HUD loading again, something has gone wrong. This usually happens due to one of the following reasons:

You have actually put your HUD files in the wrong place, or didn't put the correct location in the cg_hudFiles cvar. Make sure they are in quakelive\home\baseq3\ui\ (\home\baseq3\ is where qzconfig.cfg is), and not in quakelive\baseq3\ (where the map .pk3s are).

Make sure the cg_hudFiles cvar has "ui/hudname.cfg" and not just "hudname.cfg".

If you renamed the hudname.menu file, you will need to edit hudname.cfg to reflect this, else it is looking for a file which doesn't exist. Open hudname.cfg (Notepad will do fine) and edit the loadMenu line where your custom .menu is loaded to reflect the new name.

Make sure the .menu name is correct.

Some things about the existing config generator could use some improvement (such as it being crammed into a small column) so I decided to renew it and at the same time make it even more userfriendly by adding a couple of features:

Preview weapon style images (due long time)

A keyboard that maps your bind layout and allows you to drag/drop to bind keys to input fields. Check it out!

Expanded the rail options (also have a look at the Rail settings post I made.)

Generate a subset of values like only controls or only graphical settings

Read the full changelog.

It's still at the same location - http://www.holysh1t.net/quake-live-config-generator/ - so you don't need to change any bookmarks or browser history to visit it. Also available via Resources in the menu or through the hotlink at the top of every page on this website.

Hope you like it!

The Railgun is not just a very lethal, key weapon in Quake Live, it can also bring shiny color effects to the screen. Most players won't care and use the default settings, but some like to tweak it just perfect to their likings.

There are two styles to the railgun, set using the cvar cg_railstyle. For the new style, which gives a very nice swirl effect around the beam, set it to 0. For the old style, a beam with disc elements in it, set it to 1.

Depending on the cg_railstyle 0/1 value, several other cvars come into play and can give extra graphical effects:

color1 (default 2, values 1 to 7) represents the color of the beam.

color2 (default 7, values 1 to 7) represents the color of the effect (swirl or discs).

r_railcorewidth (default 6) represents the thickness of the beam in a rail. Applies to old (1) and new (0) style.

r_railwidth (default 16) represents the size of the discs when cg_railstyle is set to 1.

r_railsegmentlength (default 32) represents the length of the parts between discs when cg_railstyle is set to 1.

Also available, and applies to both styles, is the cvar cg_railtrailtime (default 400) which represents the amount of time before a railbeam (+ effect) fades out from screen. Some players like this very short to remove clutter. Others like this to be 1500 (rail reload time) so they can exactly determine when the opponent will have a new shot available on the moment the previous beam is completely faded out.

For fun, I suggest you mess around with the values to create ultra thin with extra big discs, or swirly effects in all kinds of colors or just have massive beams that last 3 seconds (cg_railtrailtime 3000) for all players all over the map

update: It is now possible to change the crosshair colors by using the menu or console settings! This method is a lot easier than the method described below.

Building on EmSixTeen's custom HUD installation guide we thought it would also be interesting to explain how to install a custom crosshair in Quake Live. A custom crosshair is a must, in my opinion. Standard Quake Live crosshairs have crosshairpulse which makes the crosshair expand in size each time an item is picked up. Moreover, the game Quake Live doesn't allow you to change the crosshair colors yet. Only white is available. To change your crosshair shape, such as a dot or a cross, without customizing any special files, use the following game console command:

cg_drawCrosshair X (replace X with a numeric value from 1 to 9).

To change the crosshair size use this console command:

cg_crosshairSize X (where X is again a number)

However, if you want different shapes and colors, you must go into the Quake Live game files themselves. The first option you have is to create your own custom crosshair. Here's a custom crosshair file which you can easily change to your own needs. The instructions are written next to each command in the "cyncrosshair.menu" file itself. You can also find a lot of prepared custom crosshairs on the Quake Live forums.

Once you've chosen a custom crosshair, which is basically a .menu file, you should then put it in the "ui" folder which you should create yourself if you don't have it yet:

Vista
%userprofile%\AppData\LocalLow\id Software\quakelive\baseq3\ui

XP
%appdata%\id Software\quakelive\baseq3\ui

For example :

Now all you have to do is go into your game hud config file (for example "HUDCONFIG.cfg") and add:

loadMenu { "ui/CUSTOMCROSSHAIRNAME.menu" }.

If you do not yet have a custom hud config (.cfg) file, create one in the same ui folder. Make sure you have your main config execute this custom hud config, though. To do this add the following command to your main config:

seta cg_hudFiles “ui/hudconfig.cfg”.

(Read the custom HUD installation guide for a detailed explanation on this).

Now that you have a custom crosshair, you should remove the default Quake Live crosshair so both crosshairs won't overlap. To do this set the following command to "0" in your config or in the Quake Live game console:

seta cg_drawCrosshair "0".

You are now ready to start fragging again! Feel free to ask questions if you are having trouble.

Therefor we have added a new segment to our game website, i.e. Quake Live Beginner Guides. Here you will find answers to questions like "how do I change my ingame name colors", "where is my game config in windows?" and many more.

This section will be updated often enough. If you got more questions related to the game that aren't answered yet, feel free to leave a comment as well.
