A GTV for Quake Live, that's what FragTV is. mos-6581 has created a GUI that connects to someone running a FragTV server, relaying a demo while it's being recorded, essentially creating a GTV-like experience. Holysh1t had a similar concept in development years ago that was web based but we couldn't quite package it nicely.

It looks like mos-6581 has managed to do so and added some handy features on top. The FragTV client requires a WolfcamQL installation and will also connect to TwitchTV and show the stream (for audio mostly since you're watching it in better quality in WolfcamQL) and chatbox from Twitch.

If you want to try it out, the usage is fairly simply. Download WolfcamQL, download FragTV, get the IP or URL from a FragTV server (you can test with 86.146.12.145:80 for QLRanksTV) and click connect. It's as simple as that.

FragTV is an open source, cross-platform "GTV/SourceTV/etc" for QuakeLive, broadcasting live games and synchronizing with live video feeds.

FragTV works alongside standard gaming streams. It has its own browser to provide commentary, show the stream between matches and run ads.

During matches game data will be transmitted live to all clients and WolfcamQL will play it as a normal demo thats still being recorded. Audio from the stream provides synchronized commentary thanks to a small barcode and the twitch chat rooms are parsed and relayed to the ingame chat frame.

Source code at GitHub: https://github.com/MOS-6581/FragTV

A week ago the Electonic Sports Association has opened it's doors and went into public beta. ESAGamer.com is what you can call a fundraiser website with a prize distribution promise for eSports tournaments, not just for pros, but for everyone. All you need to do is put in £5 to get everything going.

Of course when a new site like this has been launched people have a lot questions. We had the chance to sit together with the director of ESA over a Skype call and ask him some questions, so we dove straight in with questions about the prize distribution.

Holysh1t.net: All prize money will be distributed over skill tiers per game community, how many skill tiers will this money be distributed over?

ESA Director Didge: There are currently 3 tiers of skill… High, Medium and Low

HS.net: Why are there only 3 skill tiers and not 2 or 4?

Didge: Three tiers appeared to balance everything better in terms of value and quality. Launching with four tiers dilutes the prize pool too much to make it worthwhile, especially for smaller communities and only 2 tiers impacts the chances of participants placing in a prized position because of the increased level of competition.

HS.net: Using the 1000 subscribers’ example, meaning the prize pool will result in £5000, what is the prize pool distribution over the skill tiers on a weekly basis?

Didge: The combined prize pool is firstly split into 4 - 25% for each skill level and then 25% for a monthly final. We can then further divide the share between how many Sundays (or Mondays in Quake's particular case) there are in that calendar month assuming the value remains credible.

HS.net: Your website says teams can compete with members who are not subscribed, can you clarify that?

Didge: We suspect that not everybody will want to (or be able to) subscribe to the service for whatever reason, so instead of restricting access and making tournaments exclusive we engineered a way to include everybody in a way that’s fair for everybody. If your team is only partly subscribed, your team will receive the reward that reflects your teams’ collective commitment to the cause.

HS.net: So if a team consists of 4 members, of whom 3 are subscribers, what happens to the 25% of their prize money?

Didge: The remainder is recycled back into the following set of tournaments to further develop and increase the offerings for the following set of tournaments, kind of like a lottery rollover lol.

HS.net: Why do you share the total subscriptions equally across three tiers, instead of providing higher prizes for higher tier and lower prizes for the lower tier?

Didge: I think that’s the fairest way to be honest, especially considering the vast majority of the community are in fact not high skill.

HS.net: Players can intentionally play bad to drop a tier to be amongst the prizes again, how do you eliminate that from happening?

Didge: It’s counter-productive really, as you need to win games to win tournaments to win money, if you’re losing games to intentionally drop, then turn up the effort to win money, you will need to keep doing that in a cycle, when you should really just concentrate on winning. Nobody is stupid and everybody is suspicious, so when you’re caught, we will either manually override the rank or suspend/ban the account of the perpetrator. We obviously keep an eye out for such things too

HS.net: Someone who has climbed from tier 2 to tier 1 might have a really hard time to reach the winning spots for tier 1, is there a way to motivate them?

Didge: The natural desire of progression and improvement is generally a motivation for most gamers, people and aspiring professionals alike. However, ESA doesn’t just award prizes to people who finish 1st or 2nd – the prize pool can and does split credibly to more participants, so people will rarely be far away from a cash prize.

HS.net: You say you’re recycling every penny of every subscription into tournaments, how is that sustainable or is that a temporary measure to promote the site early on?

Didge: Well as we’re not yet vat registered that doesn’t come into it and our only direct cost to each sale is the merchant fee, which is around 5% - and we can absorb 5% all day long. Obviously when we become VAT registered and the government gets their hands on some of it, it’ll need to change.

HS.net: I read that for every 2000 subscribers another £2000 extra are being added to the prize pool however you already stated that every penny from subscribers is already being added, how does that work?

Didge: We’ve got some money in the bank that we want to give away as prizes. We are a little sketchy about just blowing it all on tournaments straight away, so everyone can use, abuse and never return, so this is a way we can ensure our longevity, reward the community for supporting us and put even more prize money into the mix. The community will just have to take our word for that though.

HS.net: Pay to play tournaments are said to be operated at 0% commission, can you explain how that works and how that is sustainable?

Didge: I think it would be unreasonable to continually charge people for playing in tournaments, with credit that is essentially bouncing between internal ESA accounts, especially considering we’ve recycled the majority of that credit in the first place.

HS.net: I notice that the payment options are limited to ClickandBuy, why do you only use them and how come the obvious option of PayPal is not available?

Didge: ClickandBuy is one of the few providers in the world which allows users to pay and get paid with minimum fuss. For those who don’t have it, do get it. They’re a world leader in payment processing and you all want to get paid efficiently, don’t you

I know PayPal seems like the obvious choice, it’s who we approached first but unfortunately, as a new company with an element of gambling involved, we need track record to satisfy the requirements of their acceptable use policy.

HS.net: Quake Live has a fairly small community, why was it added to the initial list of games instead of a game like League of Legends, that has millions of players?

Didge: Quake is an historic, niche and somewhat overlooked game by most providers and esports generally owes quite a lot to Quake. It was in fact, the first PC game I had played and it’s only right the godfather of all games gets a place in a system, which has the potential to really help the Quake community, if people decide to give it a try.

Furthermore it still has a following in its thousands and this system, even if only 500 people said, I’m going to give ESA a try, there will be a £2500 prize pool each month, that might encourage others who were once good, or with free time to start playing again. Who knows? Money can and does change things, but of course, it’s up to the Quake community to embrace services which are trying to help it.

HS.net: What other games will ESA support in the future? (perhaps answer the core question and then add smth about criteria for a game to be added)

Didge: We’re looking in the direction of some other games to add to our library but nothing is confirmed yet, however, we might add the occasional FIFA tournament for our existing members if they were interested. Our focus is primarily getting established and scaled with the 4 games we have launched with at this moment of time.

HS.net: Will games get cut from the site if they stop meeting certain criteria?

Didge: There are no criteria really, if a game dies or generates absolutely 0 interest then yeah, maybe but I don’t have a minimum requirement or anything like that.

HS.net: Thanks for taking the time to answer our questions, we wish you good luck with your website

Didge: No problem, thank you for the interview.

I hope this interview has made things a bit more clear, I have seen that Didge is replying directly to questions and suggestions in the site's feedback and suggestions forum so don't hesitate to ask more straight on ESA.

ESA has a poll up on their facebook page where you can vote what gametype the first public tournaments should be held with. Not a fan of facebook? Use this Strawpoll link.

If you think that the existing tools are too time consuming then look no further because Maverick Servers and Gaming has released an online tool that allows you to upload a demo file and it will spit you back a video file, 1080p, 30fps.

The demo renderer is currently not configurable but they are working on these features: custom config, different fps, render library, etc.

ESAGamer.com has officially been released into open beta, meaning anyone can register. ESAGamer is a tournament site that will work with free and paid tournaments, based on subscribers. People pay a fixed fee that will be converted into prizemoney for the tournaments. The concept is fairly simple and added up 1000 subscribers will result into £5000 prize money. The more the merrier and ESAGamer guarantees prize money tournaments for low tier players as well, given that they are subscribed, of course.

There will be an automatic ranking system that doesn't force you to challenge other players, but rather pulls data from the tournament matches. You can however still challenge others and even make a wager for that game. ESAGamer.com claims to have a system in place that will allow lower tier players to be able to play for money on their level and make a fair shot at winning.

Does this sound interesting to you? Then go ahead and subscribe. You can get a paid subscription for as little as 1 month up to a year, which currently has a special offer running. If you want to support eSports and Quake Live, this is how you can do it. Of course the site will also be available to free members who can play in open tournaments, but they will not be able to participate in prize tournaments.

Welcome esports fans to the all-new Electronic Sports Association. We have selected four titles for our early beta operations and launch events and we’re taking this opportunity to give you an insight of what you can expect from us and how we envisage the services we offer. In a nutshell, ESA charge you a subscription and then give it back as cash prizes, so you’ve got real money to pay to play for a fixed fee. As the prize pool is a reflection of the community powers it, ESA ensure it’s given back fairly across separate levels of skill.

The proposed benefits of ESA include:

Regular free cash prized tournaments for £5 per month.

Cash prizes for all levels of skill.

Global ranking system.

Real money paid immediately into your online accounts for Pay to Play.

0% Commission on P2P/H2H tournaments/matches.

Create your own private brackets and matches.

Fast withdrawals powered by ClickandBuy.

Opening tournaments promise

We’ll recycle every penny of every subscription into tournaments.

250 subscribers = 1 x £1250 prize pool.

Cash Prizes for the top 16.

£2000 bonus tournament for each 2000 subscribers (10 max)

4000 subscribers = £24,000 prize pool

And for only a fiver, it’s still pretty good news, even if you lose. The ranking system helps everybody to determine fair tournaments of separate skill. Your match data will mature quickly within the first set of tournaments, so everybody can soon start competing for money against others of relative skill.

It’s also worth a mention that teams are able to play with members who are not subscribed however, if said team places within a prized position of a subscription funded event with members who haven\'t subscribed, the team will receive a proportion of the advertised prize pool equal to their teams subscription rate. In addition, any member with a premium account can participate in any game or event we offer, so your subscription doesn’t tie you into one particular game.

As we’re in early beta, your communities are the first to sample our new services fresh out of alpha testing. There may be bugs and occasionally things may go wrong, however, we value your feedback and aim to have problems resolved in quick succession. The early beta version provides a good representation of how we intend to move forward. As we grow and refine our services, you will be glad to know we’ve got more moves up our sleeves to add to the flavour of what we’re doing here. If ESA does not deliver what we promise, you have every right to cancel your subscription.

We hope you like what we have worked hard to achieve. Welcome to the Electronic Sports Association.

When real life gets in the way, news is slightly delayed. I welcome applications to post Quake news so leave a comment if you are interested. Now on topic: the standard mappool has been switched up for June and we can expect little from CTF this month with Siberia and Space CTF in the pool (you know which you want to play and which will get played the most). Phrantic and Aerowalk, amongst others, are present for Duel. TDM has no interesting maps in the pool this month (thanks to Lam for confirming my thoughts). If there's any time to get a 1 month token, now is it.

The latest sampler is Attack & Defend. Id Software describes it as a mix between CTF and CA, where each team takes turns attacking or defending the flag. Sounds like fun? Sampler servers are up and available for everyone!

The June 2013 Standard arena rotation is now online. On the first Monday of each month, we will be cycling the Standard arena pool. Rather than only having access to the same standard arenas day in and day out, each month we will now feature 25 arenas selected as playable for Standard-level matches.

Newly released arenas will remain exclusive for at least three months, but every other arena is eligible to be included in the cycle.

Standard Map Pool:
Start date: June 3, 2013
End date: July 1, 2013

Asylum
Brimstone Abbey
Cliffside
Corrosion
Fluorescent (CTF)
Focal Point
Grim Dungeons
Hero's Keep
Infinity (CTF)
Inner Sanctums (CTF)
Jumpwerkz (CTF)
Realm of Steel Rats
Rebound (CTF)
Seams and Bolts
Siberia (CTF)
Sinister
Somewhat Damaged
Space CTF (CTF)
Use and Abuse
Wargrounds

The new Sampler matches are up running Attack & Defend on Fluorescent.

Attack & Defend is a mixture of Capture the Flag, and Clan Arena. Teams spawn with all weapons, ammo, and armor, and take turns attacking the flag, or defending the flag. By default, players start with 100 health, 100 armor, and suffer no self damage. Teams get 1 point for touching the flag, and 2 additional points if they manage to capture, or eliminate the full team. Be careful not to frag the defenders before getting a flag touch, the lost point may be the difference between winning and losing!

As always, the Sampler servers are available in limited capacity, so look for matches named "A&D Sampler" and enjoy!

For those who haven't logged in in the past 2 days, the Quake Live sampler has been switched up to Domination. What you need to do in Domination is capture points and make sure your team doesn't lose them, simple as that.

The sampler matches have been switched up again and we are now running Domination on Purgatory.

Domination pits two teams vying to capture control points scattered around the arena. Players spawn with all weapons near a control point that they own, or randomly around the arena if none are owned. Capture a point by standing nearby, and then defend it from incoming attackers attempting to do the same.

As always, the Sampler servers are available in limited capacity, so look for matches named "Domination Sampler" and enjoy!

Id Software has release Premium Pak 17, meaning that everyone who has a paid subscription will get new content and (slightly) older premium content will be passed down to the free members. This time however 1 of the new premium maps will be released straight into the standard mappool: a Clan Arena map named Repent. This has everything to do with the fact that Quake Live was unavailable for quite some time. To further soothe the sore Id Software has also extended the paid subscriptions by 3 days.

Now that I have briefly mentioned Repent: along with this new map Id Software also released 2 other maps. A TDM map named Arcane Citadel and a duel map named Cure. All 3 maps also purpose other game modes such as Red Rover, Freeze Tag and others (details in the full release note). I will run through all of these maps <del>later and attach a video if my partner in crime Lashknife is up for it</del>.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tBuUdiWQ2wI

Further down the release note we can find that next weekend will be free premium weekend! The rest of the premium pak includes a few other smaller changes that have been made to the game, such as a HUD Score Element fix and some map fixes.

This concludes the short overview of the new Premium Pak, read the full log by clicking the Continue Reading button if you have stumbled on this post via our homepage or click here to read it straight from the source.

QUAKE LIVE Premium Pak 17 is now online. This update features three new arenas from both community members, and a new in-house arena targeted at our Clan Arena mode. We are also announcing our plans to players in response to our recent downtime.

Premium Arenas Added

Repent:

Repent is a new Clan Arena map from id Software. Set in the bowels of a decaying place of worship, the forgotten elder god who calls this cathedral home has grown angry and jaded towards mankind in his years of solitude. Refusing to be cast aside and banished to the nether realms, he now holds together his decaying cathedral with every ounce of power left in him.

Repent excels in Clan Arena matches ranging from 2v2 up to 8v8, and has unique item layouts and additional support for Free For All, Duel, Team Deathmatch (2v2), Freeze Tag, and Red Rover.

Arcane Citadel:

Making a return to their TDM roots the authors of Purgatory and Limbus, 'akm' and 'Yellack', bring us the gothic beauty of Arcane Citadel. Here combatants battle for control between the moon-lit quad courtyard and the perilous battle-suit pit, and with no Railgun in sight, players must fully commit to their fight if they wish to regain control of lost territory. Arcane Citadel also comes with its own mood music, a new sinister sounding music track by re:deep.

Crafted for 4v4 Team Deathmatch, Arcane Citadel also supports for Free For All, Clan Arena, Freeze Tag, Domination, and Red Rover.

Cure:

Ferdinand 'cityy' List, the author of Silence, debuts his latest duel arena, Cure, in Quake Live. Cure is set in a mid-century European village where an abandoned post-war sanatorium resides. Twisting halls leading through and between highly vertical multi-tiered alleyways, commonly result in visceral close quarter combat as players stragetically chose their paths through this spacious villa.

Cure has been designed for Duel, and includes additional support for Free For All, Team Deathmatch (2v2), Clan Arena, Freeze Tag, and Red Rover.
Code Updates:

Hud Scorebox Element fixed on Large HUD.

No longer allow servers owners to be kicked via 'callvote clientkick'.

Arena Changes

Overkill
- Resolved a large number of z-fighting issues.

Warehouse
- Added additional spawn points to better facilitate large matches and reduce spawn frags.

Wargrounds
- Added additional spawn points to better facilitate large matches and reduce spawn frags.

Additionally, as a token of our appreciate for your patience through our recent downtime, we are happy to announce the following:

Subscriptions Extended: The expiration date for all subscriptions have been extended by 3 days, to make up for lost time.

Free Premium Arena Weekend: We are opening up access to all arenas from Friday, May 10th through Sunday, May 12th. Players will be able to play on all arenas at all membership levels, and our Pro subscribers will be able to launch standard matches utilizing the full array of maps.

Accept our Repentance: The new Clan Arena map from id Software, Repent, will be added to this month's Standard Map Rotation and available for everyone to play beginning today.

For those who have missed the News button on the Quake Live website: sponge has released a bit more information about the downtime. Most importantly, anyone who has registered after Monday, April 29, starting from 2AM CDT (8AM GMT, 9AM CET) will have to register his account again. Anyone who made changes to his already existing account will have to make them again, this includes profile settings, ingame-settings and binds that are replicated to the site (qlconfig and repconfig) and the addition or removal of friends and clans. Check your settings and make sure everything is alright.

Finally, Id Software has made it clear that there will be a compensation.

Early Monday morning, the QUAKE LIVE infrastructure suffered a major outage impacting stability and performance. Over the past 48 hours, we've been working to resolve the issue, and have now restored service to the public. While all attempts have been made at ensuring the site remains stable, we may run into intermittent issues going forward, so please continue to be patient while we work through any remaining issues.

The outage forced us to rollback around 6 hours of data, from approximately Monday 2AM CDT, to 7AM CDT. This has the following implications on end-users:

Any accounts created between in the above time window will have to be recreated.

Changes to your profile, settings/binds, friends, and other account data may need to be recreated.

The scheduled content release has been delayed until the site's stability is established.

Compensation for the downtime will also be announced once the site is presumed stable.
