Which config to customize?

December 23, 2008 21 comments Article

When you finally located your Quake Live config, you will be confronted with two game config files, i.e. qzconfig.cfg and repconfig.

To be quite honest it’s a bit silly to have two config files even. Therefore, I’ve got my own method to work with my Quake Live config. I’ll run you through it step by step.

  1. First of all, start Quake Live, join a server, open console and type /writeconfig yourname.cfg. This way you will have all comments stored in one configfile and it’s easier to work.
  2. Go back to your config folder and create an extra config file autoexec.cfg. In this file you should only put exec “yourname.cfg”.
  3. Start Quake live again, join a game, open console and type /exec autoexec.
From now on, everytime you start Quake Live, it will run yourname.cfg
  4. (you should probably skip this part)
clear your qzconfig.cfg and repconfig.cfg completely and then put them on read only. By doing this, you make sure yourname.cfg will never interfere with any other config. I am not 100% sure if this step is necessary, I just do this for extra security reasons.

You are now ready to start customizing your yourname.cfg for an optimal gaming experience.

    strange

Make sure you put the config in the right folder: http://www.holysh1t.net/quake-live-config-located-windows/

Which is id Softwarequakelivehomebaseq3 (don’t forget home).

Also make sure your autoexec file is in fact a .cfg file and nog an autoexec.txt.cfg file. This might require you to make your extensions visible in the same windows option menu that asks you to make your folders hidden or visible. This way you can make sure your file name is autoexec.cfg (without the . at the end).

Now type in the console /exec autoexec one time and if it executes you should never do it again.

Step 3 and 4 aren’t really necessary to be honest. Autoexec should execute itself on startup automaticly, hence the name. But if step 3 fails anyway it means something went wrong along the way.

Killbutt: Did you make the qzconfig.cfg and repconfig.cfg files read-only? IIRC the autoexec is run from qzconfig, and if you made them read-only prior to that going into autoexec it won’t have stored the change.

Just wondering, if I happen to find 2 different configs that I like using. Is there a way for me to load one or the next one even on the fly? Sorry I’m not computer savvy and barely got the autoexec.cfg trick to work for one.

Yes you can. You can bind these to buttons or do it via the console.

“Go back to your config folder and create an extra config file autoexec.cfg. In this file you should only put exec ?yourname.cfg?.”

Word of advice to the retards like myself – take out the quotes in your autoexec.cfg – so it would be: exec yourname.cfg

Thanks for this great article you saved me some hassles

Nice. But you should really remove the quotes around yourname.cfg, it’s not really obvious that they should be left out for it to work.

    Confused with step 2:

How do I create a new config file? I try to open the other 2; it seems that I don’t have the proper software!! Strangely enough they are Microsoft Office Outlook Configuration file format…

I went to File>>New and no selection outlook configuration file, just the usual word, text document, zipped folder, etc…

    Can anyone help please!?!?!

Nothing of this fucking shit works. And how do i take away the qzconfig and the repconfig??

Right-click, Delete…. Create 2 new files but leave them empty and set them to read-only. How about some common sense?
Or open the files, delete everything inside, which is the same. Then set to read only (right-click, Properties, read-only)

Right click in the folder, New -> Text Document. Then rename that document to autoexec.cfg
Windows will not know how to open a .CFG file but you can always open it with Notepad again later, right click, “Open with…” Then select Notepad.exe from the list.

I have added a gallery with images that will make things more clear.
