Quake Live subscriptions changed

Id Software has lowered the prices for a Pro subscription and removed the Premium option altogether. Good news for all the Pro users, but not so pleasant for the Premium users. Only 1 subscription option is left, which simplifies the model. A token for 1 month will now cost $/€4.99, 3 months will cost $/€11.99 and a years worth of premium content will set you back $/€35.99. It’s no longer possible to buy a 6 month token as they were not populair, says SyncError in the news report.

This means Premium users will be paying more compared to the old model if they have been buying tokens. People who have an existing Premium subscription, as opposed to tokens, will be able to keep their subscription at the old price, even if it’s being renewed indefinitely. Though these Premium subscriptions won’t have the advantages of the new Pro subscription. The accounts will not be converted to the new model, as they will simply remain Premium as you know it. Unused tokens will still be redeemable in their current form and add up to your premium time.

A comparison shows that the largest saving is for subscribers paying for 3 months of Pro, who are saving $/€9.58. If we take the 12 month option, the new pricing comes down to less than 10 (0.098) cents per day, which is still the best offer.

Old Premium Old Pro New Pro Pro Savings Premium Increase
Monthly $/€1,99 $/€7,99 $/€4,99 -3,00 +2,00

Bi-yearly $/€17,94 $/€35,95 removed
Yearly $/€23,88 $/€47,88 $/€35,99 -11,89 +12,11

Here’s the difference in pound sterling:

Old Premium Old Pro New Pro Pro Savings Premium Increase
Monthly £3,18 £6,36 £3,99 -2,37 +0,81
Quarterly £8,58 £17,16 £8,99 -8,17 +0,41
Bi-yearly £14,28 £28,62 removed
Yearly £19,08 £38,16 £27,99 -10,17 +8,91

SyncError also mentions that the changes are made to simplify their offerings but also in preparation of some future changes to Quake Live. I’m very curious to see what the future will bring to Quake Live, one can only guess what it will be. Quakecon is right around the corner and more details will be revealed at the venue.

We are happy to announce today a change to our subscription service. Effectively immediately, we have permanently lowered the price of Pro subscriptions and are no longer selling Premium subscriptions, bringing us down to one subscription level. We have some additional changes in the pipeline for the coming weeks and months, but wanted to get this first step out as soon as we could. Be sure to follow us during QuakeCon, as we will have some more Quake Live related news to announce there!

Now is a great time to check out our new prices and go Pro!

How are Quake Live subscriptions changing?

We are no longer selling new Premium subscriptions and tokens, and will begin to only sell Pro subscriptions at a reduced price. We have also removed the option for 6 month subscriptions as they are the least popular out of all subscriptions. We are making this change in order to simplify our offerings, and in preparation of some future changes to Quake Live.

What happens to my Premium subscription?

Nothing. We will continue to renew your Premium subscription at the current prices, until we are unable to renew your Premium subscription for any reason. At that point, you will only have the choice to purchase a new Pro subscription. Unused Premium tokens will still redeem to your account as Premium time.

I just purchased a Premium subscription, and want to upgrade to Pro. Can I do this?

Upgrade pricing still applies. At any time, you can upgrade to Pro, and you will receive a credit based on how much Premium time you have left.
