Just a quick guide here from myself to hopefully help some people figure out how to get and use a custom HUD for QuakeLive. No screenshots of course, that would severely break NDA. :p

First off, go and find whatever custom HUD you’d like to use, or get the default HUD files. This thread on the QuakeLive Beta forums has lots of custom HUDs and chat regarding them, and searching around those forums will yield some more results. However, let’s pretend you’re using mine, which is available here. Download it, extract it with WinRAR to wherever you like, and then navigate to the extracted \quakelive\baseq3\ui\, and put those files in the folder below. By default the ‘ui’ folder will not be there – You have to make it, then put the HUD files in there (.menu and .cfg files). Start Menu, then Run the address to get there quickly.

Vista
%userprofile%\AppData\LocalLow\id Software\quakelive\home\baseq3\ui

XP
%appdata%\id Software\quakelive\home\baseq3\ui

For example:

Folder Structure

All these files are editable in notepad/wordpad, of course. If you rename your .menu file, you need to edit a line in the .cfg file to let it know where your .menu file is, like shown here:

quake live hud code

Then, either via console in-game or via your playing config, put in this line:

hud config line

If you did it in-game, you’ll need to type /loadhud in console for it to take effect – Otherwise, if you did it via your config, it should take effect next time you load up QuakeLive.

Happy fragging. :)

Any problems, just ask around in #quakelive.beta or #qlpickup.eu – Plenty of people are willing to help there.

great post, EmSixTeen! I am sure this is useful to a lot of people who have been struggling to get their custom HUDs working.

  3. Hey guys!
just a little correction if im not wrong,
    XP
    Correct -
    %appdata%\id Software\quakelive\baseq3\ui
    Wrong -
    %appdata%\id Software\quakelive\home\baseq3\ui

I think its the opposite, my ui folder is here with XP: Datos de programa\id Software\quakelive\home\baseq3\ui

Nice work with this page :D

  4. nah, it’s definitely what I’ve got down.. If you put it where you’re saying, the HUD won’t work. There are two ‘baseq3′ folders, which is what get people confused.. I’ll add in a screenshot of the structure.

  5. I very much like this guide.

The images really make it easy to understand every step of the way :)

  6. I have my hud in home\baseq3\ui and it works fine.. ?

    On XP

  7. Really? How odd.. Interesting to know though, but I’ll not be changing that guide. :)

  8. Guys, it’s all good that you take the initiative, but somehow lacks the commands that you can manage for your HUD. Or ID doesn’t allow this?
I hope they will be readable soon, because non-stop comparing to other players’ cfg-s is really tiring.
And good luck! I’m sure this will be the site about QL we’ll all read the most!

  9. Being able to edit your quake live HUD isn’t really something that was intended by the developers. People just found out by themselves how to do it.

Changing your HUD isn’t an easy customization like changing a setting using the ingame menu, that’s for sure. Yet customizing your HUD is nothing more than a luxury anyway, definitely considering Quake Live is still in the beta phase.

It’s not even sure the id software developers won’t decide to disallow HUD customization all together eventually.

If you just want an easy way to change your config without having to test and compare,… we are working on something that might help you with that in the future.

  10. You should expand on the last bit; about where you tell everyone how to actually enable the HUD when installed. That’s the part that I’m having trouble with right now, I just don’t understand what to do after the files are in the right place^^.

I want to try out some of the custom HUDs I’ve seen, but I’m worried about being able to uninstall them later. If I just delete the UI folder and everything in it, will the HUD revert to the default, or will settings somewhere be changed? If yes, how do I go back to the original HUD afterward?

  13. Just use the seta cg_hudfiles command and set to to nothing

    like seta cg_hudfiles “”

  14. Im using the pyrohud, but can’t seem to make the scores show up even though the commands are there in the .cfg any ideas?

  15. Great guide! Thanks so much for your hud and helpful comments!

    Hi,
THx a lot for your fantastic config.
On a MacIntosh you need to install these files in:
    /Users/yourUserid/Library/Application\ Support/QuakeLive/quakelive/home/baseq3
Where yourUserid is the name of your userid.

    best regards

  18. the HUD renaming doesn’t make ANY sense at all.
Place then rename to what you renamed.

    WTF?

  19. Thanks for the HUDs! :)

You’re the worst writer, however, mankind has ever had this misfortune of reading. If you ever write another procedural text… shoot yourself in the fucking face :)

  22. EmSixTeen Feb 10th, 2010 at 2:33 pm  (Quote)

Yeah sorry, you need to go to the \baseq3\ folder and make a new empty folder called ‘ui’ and place the HUD files in there.

cus i tryed it and it didnt work.

  26. I cannot find any “quakelive” folder just a “quakelivebetatest” folder and that doesn’t have any folders in it, only 2 shortcuts???

  27. http://www.holysh1t.net/quake-live-config-located-windows/

this post explains where the quakelive folder is, go into the /home/baseq3 folder, create a ui folder there, and put the hud files (menu and a cfg/txt)

then ingame, open console and type:
/cg_hudfiles “ui/myhud.cfg” (or “ui/myhudfile.txt”, just make it match your cfg/txt file you put there)
then do /loadhud to instantly apply it to your screen.

should work, unless the hud is broken, or you misplaced files!

The HUD files probably aren’t in the correct folder.. Are they definitely in

    ..\quakelive\home\baseq3\ui\hudname.cfg (and hudname.menu)

    and then

    cg_hudFiles “ui/hudname.cfg”

  30. What about for mac?
I dont really know how to do it!

    hello

  32. I think part of the confusion is that you are showing 2 different locations in the first post. Your photo shows that the folder goes OUTSIDE of the home folder in one baseq. (the photo reflects %userprofile%\AppData\LocalLow\id Software\quakelive\baseq3\ui) but then your text to what folder is

    Vista
    %userprofile%\AppData\LocalLow\id Software\quakelive\home\baseq3\ui

There are 2 baseq folders. One in the general Qlive folder and one in the home folder. You have shown both.
